The nail condition onychogryphosis, often known as ram’s horn nail, is caused by slow nail plate growth. It is characterised by a thickening of the nail plate that is opaque and yellow-brown in colour, as well as elongation and increased curvature.

Who is more prone to have this disorder?

It’s more common in the elderly, persons who don’t have enough personal care, and patients with senile dementia.

Causes:

Symptoms include:

  • Thick nails

In Paronychia, the tissue folds around the nails become infected. In other words, the infection of the tissue next to a nail, most commonly a fingernail, is known as paronychia. The adjacent tissue is bloated, red, and painful. In severe cases, pus can also be found in the affected region.

Paronychia is mostly of two types:

  • Acute paronychia : It starts suddenly.
  • Chronic paronychia: It starts gradually.

Acute paronychia: Acute paronychia occurs when a nail fold turns painful, red, and swollen in a short span of time. Under the cuticle, a yellow pus may form. A particularly severe form of acute paronychia may be accompanied by fever and painful tissues under the arms.

Chronic paronychia: Chronic paronychia evolves over time and is far more difficult to eradicate. It may begin in one nail fold, but it frequently spreads to others. Each damaged nail fold (the skin that runs alongside the nail) swells and rises above the nail. It may become red and painful at times, and a little amount of thick pus (white, yellow, or green) may be produced from beneath the cuticle.

As the nail grows, it gets deformed and ridged. It can become yellow or green and become brittle. The nails may take up to a year to grow back to normal after recovery.

Treatments:

Treatments for paronychia differ depending on the underlying issue. In severe instances, the following options may be considered:

  • warm compresses.
  • topical antibiotics.
  • oral antibiotics.
  • In extreme situations, surgical incision and drainage are required.

A doctor will usually focus on treating cause of the disease to treat chronic paronychia. Avoiding allergies and irritants is also necessary as a part of the treatment. The overall t reatment can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to get completed.
